With all of the technology available to us today, it’s surprising that anyone ever gets lost. There are cutting-edge inventions like GPS that are more and more common in cars and phones. It seems like we’re never far from cell phone service, either, so a quick call is all that needs to happen before help will arrive.

Even the Luddites among us have tools available to make sure everyone can reach his or her destination. Using a map and a compass, it’s easy to orient and navigate oneself back to a car or nearby city. Yet every year, people lose their way. It’s easy to do in this vast world of ours.

Find out Lily and Marni’s opinions about getting around in this English lesson about maps.

Lily:  You know what I cannot live without?

Marni:  What?

Lily:  My GPS on my phone. I get lost all the time. I can’t help it.

Marni:  I think GPS is great. I’m all about cutting-edge technology. But if I need to navigate somewhere, I swear, I still need a paper map. I put myself inside and orient myself, and then find my destination.

Lily:  Do you still use a compass?

Marni:  No, no, I’m not that old-fashioned, but I guess in some ways I am a bit of a Luddite. There are just certain things I don’t use technology for. When I need to get somewhere, I get the map of the city, and I just figure it out. I like plotting certain points.

Lily:  It’s kind of old-fashioned, but I can understand why you would want to have something concrete in front of you instead of a digital thing where you’re at the mercy of your phone either giving out or losing battery. It is also nice to have that little dot on the GPS that tells you exactly where you are and exactly where you’re going.

Marni:  I guess I like a little more of a challenge.

Lily is in love with the GPS system on her phone. Using GPS, she can find her way around town and doesn’t worry about getting lost. Plus, it’s easy. All she has to do is look at her phone and it will tell her where she is. She doesn’t have to waste time with a map.

Marni thinks of herself as a Luddite because she prefers to use maps. She thinks a compass is a bit old-fashioned, but she likes feeling like she’s inside the map because then she can orient herself. Lily understands why Marni would appreciate a map instead of GPS since a map doesn’t need electricity, but she still thinks that GPS is best.

Have you ever been really lost? Do you like to use a map and a compass, or would you rather use GPS? What do you think is the best way to find your destination?

Yes, I have ever been really. lost, especially travelling abroad. I think I like GPS the most although I do also use a map and a compass. Sometimes, my GPS tells me to head to the South or the North. I dont have a good sense of direction, so I need a compass to locate positions for me.

At least there is no chance of using wrong map while using gps navigator. It is same like doing calculation in your mind vs doing it through calculator. If you figure out from mind it makes your mind little brighter even if you do mistakes and after few times it makes you master of both calculation and territory. But the thing is, in this fast paced world, we have to figure out hell lot of things in limited time and if we think so much about health of our brain, we end up doing nothing. In this cutting edge technological world you don’t need to bother too much about thinking, you only need proper devices and will to do.

Underage can’t have driving license, and the only option which is allowed is to be behind Golf Car wheel ‘in limits baby’..

Camp , discover a place by yourself without Tech stuff,  turn back to old-fashion instruments as; paper map , compass and orients are really awesome and my type.

What I wanted to prove in here that GPS, Map paper and Compass all are necessary and useful, I think it’s only a little different from person to another which he/she feels in. Ex; London Cab Taxi is the best ever, why?

Not only because this taxi is equipped and supported by GPS, satellite, place for wheelchairs , can round in the smallest streets in London, but also and the most important here is the driver who is not as others.

Cab Taxi driver is unique, he studies 4 years , comes everyday for hours to the institute , saves every inch in London map in his mind, many and many give up and only those who have intelligent, smart mind can pass the test and get the license to be a Cab Taxi Driver who himself is a GPS, hands down.

Just book by the app which will help you to find the nearest free Cab Taxi, give you info about the driver, few minutes and one will be under your control, have fun in London you are in safe hands!!!!

It had happened  that I was asked for directions by people  who were lost and clueless  as which way to go,  confidentely ,I  pointed out how they should get at destination ,  only  later to realize  that  i had misguided them.Moriza,If you ever get lost, don´t ask me, dogs and cats have way more orientation than me.   lol.

Hmm.. Interesting!

For me, when I get lost, I just ask people around me about the right way :D . I know what’s coming up to your mind now, it’s “And what would you do if you got lost in a place where there’s no one else but you, like in a forest or a desert?” Well, I’m gonna say that I never get alone anywhere.. and people here are all around. Plus, I don’t travel alone and have adventures in deserted places _ . But you know?, I must know more about using GPS and maps also, just in case :)

Certainly, that fact that we live in the centure of high-technology is the big lucky. We can use a lot of cutting-edge invents in our daily life and that fact is cool. On the other hand, hardly somebody begin to deny that fact that using all modern devices, we have get lost something important from our life. For instance, many of us try to keep up in their houses some old-fashioned: old clock, old books, old foto camera etc.
Besides, we need to remember that sometimes new technology can not help you in the necessary situation. For example, I recall the case when I arrived in the new town and my GPS in the cell phone couldn’t find sputnik and it was became a big trouble for us. If we had the present map in the hands, that situation could be solve more faster and easier.
So, I’m sure that we have to use new technology but also we have to remember about more easier but more reliable things.

I try to orient on the region using some signs, for instance the position of the Sun or stars, sounds, place-names and some familiar things. But of course when I have gps in my hip-pocket it’s helpful.

Paper maps have one feature: you can see all details of region completely on one big page and you can draw on it without battery.

Yes, I already have been lost. It was really hard to put myself going in the track again. At that time a map could be usefull but I didn’t have one. GPS helps, but sometimes we don’t have internet signal. The best way not to get lost is to plan the route in advantage…......

your GPS story didnt make me surprised :-) coz it happened to  me many times ..it took me to wrong places..once ,it left us on the peak of a mountain..another time,it took us to a closed road..another problem is to to know adress COMPLETELY .one wrong or absent letter can take to very different adress ..

I prefer to use a paper map instead of GPS. When I was in military service, my senior emphasized to use paper map. He said to me, “You have to listen to a song of bird and the sound of flowing waters in the map.” I tried to listen to those kinds of soundings. Unfortunately, I’ve never heard sounding from the map. However, I became a specialist to find the location by using paper map. As long as a paper map provides lots of information about building location, path way, hight, and useful informations, I will use it under no technology’s situations.

I’m used to getting lost, but in my country we’re not used to using maps or compass if someone gets lost, we’re kind of villagers ones. If someone gets lost he starts to require about roads, avenues, streets to everyone around the place where he got lost, that’s amazing ! And maybe some maps are made if avenues or streets are well-made, I mean in order, but in here all streets are in disorder, so there’s no way to make maps.
