Coldplay became huge stars a couple of years ago, when they released their first album, Parachutes. It featured the worldwide smash hit “Yellow.” The British band recently released their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, and it’s amazing. Much less homogenous than Parachutes, the new album has a lot of variety in musical style and lyrical content.

The best thing about Coldplay is their singer, Chris Martin. Without him, the band wouldn’t be nearly as interesting. He sings with overwhelmingly earnest angst and emotion. In most of the songs, he’s wailing about one of three things: death, war or (most often) lost love.
The first single from A Rush of Blood to the Head, called “In My Place,” is a perfect example. Check out some of the lyrics:
I was scared,
I was scared,
Tired and under prepared,
But I wait for you.
If you go,
If you go,
Leaving me here on my own,
Then I’ll wait for you.
Chris has obviously experienced some painful things in his life. He sounds unsure and insecure – probably because he’s been hurt before and he’s scared of being hurt again.

Discussion

Although I don’t think their new album contains a song as good as “Yellow,” I do think it’s a great album. I love the way Chris Martin sings and I can identify with his lyrics. It’s not the most upbeat or uplifting music, but it’s definitely good music to listen to if you’re feeling blue.
It’s hard to define Coldplay’s music. I think they’re a mellow rock band. If you like other British rock bands, like Radiohead or the Smiths, you’ll definitely like Coldplay. I’ve also heard them being compared to Pink Floyd, so if you’re a Floyd fan, make sure to check them out.
Rock on,
Migs
