King Kong is a three-hour long Hollywood blockbuster that everyone is talking about. The film has everything, from dinosaurs and giant insects to an overgrown ape that goes romping through the streets of 1930s New York.

Taylor: I saw King Kong last night.

Dave: Oh, you just saw it last night?

Taylor: Yeah. It was intense. Three hours long, but rightfully so. This movie has dinosaurs fighting King Kong…

Dave: Yeah, I heard about that.

Taylor: ...dinosaurs fighting each other, swinging through the trees, cliffs, natives.

Dave: Now, who stars in that? Jack Black...

Taylor: Jack Black, Adrian Brody, ah, Naomi Watts.

Dave: ...ah, that’s right, Naomi Watts.

Taylor: Yeah.

Dave: I like Naomi Watts.

Taylor: And they’re all fantastic in it.

Dave: Now, the first, you know, fifty minutes, I’ve heard, can be kind of slow.

Taylor: Only slow if you’re not in complete awe over the 1930s New York transformation.

Dave: What was the most impressive scene, in your mind?

Taylor: Um, the first visit with the natives on, on Skull Island. It was pretty scary.

Discussion

On the surface, King Kong is a fish out of water tale about a large beast in the big city. At a deeper level, though, the story is about people’s inability to see beyond appearances and notice that even a monstrously large wild animal can have a heart of gold.
