Thrift Shopping

Thrift shops are big business in the US. Anything that’s vintage is in style these days, from a 1950’s couch to a Charlie’s Angels T-shirt (the original Angels, that is). If you know where to go, you can get some great used stuff for cheap.

Sure, there are people who prefer to buy new. But many people just can’t afford it. Young folks who don’t have a lot of money don’t mind buying second -hand clothes or appliances. They can save money and be in style at the same time.

Listen to Mason and Emily talk about their thrift store finds.

Mason:  It is a rare day that I am not wearing something that I bought at a thrift store. That’s something I’m very proud of. I wear that, like, you know, a badge on my thrift store sleeve.

Emily:  I don’t necessarily buy a lot of clothes at thrift stores, but I think I’ve bought a lot of furniture…

Mason:  Really.

Emily:  And pieces for my house, like, maybe a TV here and there. My mom’s a huge fan of Goodwill printers, laser printers, because people get new ones, and you know, they’re like a year old, and they work great and they’re, like, ten bucks...or, like, a new mouse for your computer.

Mason:  Nice. Nice. I personally, I collect mugs, so I’m always checking out, like, the thrift stores for interesting mugs.

Emily:  That’s a, that’s a great place to go for mugs.

Mason:  It’s a good collection. Uh, I’m pretty proud of it… Well, and not to mention, I mean, certain styles, especially around here…most of the… a lot of the new clothes are trying to imitate a style that’s already happened, or, like, the distressed look, you know, on jeans, you know, buying new jeans with holes in them. Hey, I can go get jeans that, like, have actual real holes in them for $4.00…

Emily:  For $1.50!

Mason:  ... at Value Village. Sweet!

Discussion

Mason is proud of his thrift store wardrobe.

Emily doesn’t buy much used clothing. But she does buy second-hand furniture. Emily’s mom likes to get computer stuff at thrift stores.

Mason looks for mugs at thrift stores. He collects them.

Mason and Emily laugh at people who spend money on new clothes that look used. They don’t understand why folks don’t realize how much money they could save buying used clothes, and they would still be in fashion.

Do you shop at thrift stores? What kinds of things do you buy used?

I have hardly bought something in this kind of shops in my entire life. Before we had a lot such shops in Russia. Now these shops are in small towns. In big towns people prefer to put AD in papers to sell something being used or new. But now there are a lot of stock-centres that sell clothes last year’s fashion. That is not totally out of fashion and wasn’t used. As for me I prefer to buy new things, whatever it was. Better If I even have just one thing but it was bought new.:-) But I can take something used from my sister , furniture , for example. That I don’t mind, and my daughter doesn’t mind to wear things after my sister. She is well-off and always buys just best clothes, often abroad. In our family things are just like that.
