Quote

1. Quote - Listen to the quote and guess what the slang means.

“And being a Yankee fan anywhere in Massachusetts is bad. And then there came the playoffs, and they were playing the Red Sox. ... When they got to Fenway and Yankee stadium, it really became quite heated. It was real. It’s their turf. They have every reason to be angry and hostile. I mean, they have 80 years of bad luck. And so, it was tense. I got all of us tickets to go to Fenway Park, and so we all went. Yankee fans at Fenway … it was tense.”
-Sarah Jessica Parker, talking about being a Yankee fan

Definition

1. Definition - Study the definition.

Literally, the word ‘turf’ means ground. When you use it the way that Sarah Jessica Parker does in this quote, it means the ground that belongs to you, or that you are used to.

2. Use - Learn how the slang is used.

The word turf is used when there are people or groups from different sides competing together. Usually, a competition takes places on one of the teams’ or competitors’ turf. It is usually used in terms of sports, although for a while I heard this term used on the news to talk about gangs in big cities. The gangs would mark their turf by spray-painting it. Then they would say that it belonged to them.

Examples

1. Examples - Hear some example sentences.

””Hey! Get out of here! This is our turf! Go back to your own playground!”“

””Hey! Get out of here! This is our turf! Go back to your own playground!”
“We were so surprised when the Portland Trailblazers lost to the L.A. Lakers. I mean, all their fans were there cheering! They were on their own turf.”
“It’s a lot easier to negotiate with someone when you are on your own turf. The other party is weakened because they are away from their normal day-to-day life.”
