I can distinctly remember the first time I ever heard this phrase. I was in the second grade. Here in the US, we are about 7 years old in the second grade. Anyway, we had a visitor who had traveled around the world.
My teacher got on the stage to announce the visitor and ended with “let’s give it up for .” (Sorry, but I forgot his name) None of the kids knew what to do. They just sat there because they didn’t understand what it meant to *_give it up for someone.
All of the teachers and other adults clapped like they were supposed to. At the end of the presentation, when they asked us to give it up for _ again, we all knew what to do.
We learned pretty quickly what to do when someone said to
give it up for* someone.
