Hi Friends!
Experiencing art is an important and enlightening experience. One can see art in a variety of places, including public spaces, museums, libraries and galleries. If you want to purchase art, you can go to a gallery and pick out something that appeals to you.
On the first Thursday of every month all of the art galleries in Portland, Oregon are open for extra hours so that the people of the city may visit them after work. The open galleries attract thousands of people to the downtown area, filling the sidewalks with pedestrians.
First Thursday is a great tradition. Listen to Beth and Zach’s conversation to learn more about it.

Zach:  Hey Beth, what did you do last night?

Beth:  I actually went out for First Thursday and checked out some of the art around town.

Zach:  Cool. What’s, what is First Thursday exactly?

Beth:  It’s a night where all the galleries open their exhibitions to the general public, and they, I guess, show off the newest collection, or the newest work for the month. And it’s a really big social gathering where lots of people go out and are very festive and excited about viewing art.

Zach:  Wow. So you just kinda cruise around and there’s a lot of people out and you just check out, like, paintings and stuff?

Beth:  Yeah. It’s really neat. There are a lot of galleries that are packed and then there are all these street artists that line up along the side of the sidewalk and sell their work. And it’s really cool because there’s an eclectic crowd, and everyone is doing their own style and different types of – different media, so… It’s, it’s really cool.

Zach:  That sounds like a lot of fun. What, what was your favorite, uh, piece of art that you saw?

Beth:  Well, I met this woman who does rice paper art and she’s really talented and it was really interesting to learn about how she got into her work. And just looking at all of her stuff – it was really fun.

Zach:  Nice. That sounds awesome.

Beth:  Yeah!

Discussion

First Thursday is my favorite day of the month. It’s so much fun to go out on the streets and see all of the people wandering around. It’s a great time for people watching, because many people dress up for the event. Also, in addition to the people and the art, there are often street musicians, dancers and other performers. Last First Thursday I saw a group of people doing Brazilian capoeira, which was really cool.
Many cities in the U.S. have celebrations that are similar to First Thursday. Seattle, for example, has an art walk on the first Thursday of every month as well. If you’re in the U.S., you should check out a local newspaper to find out when and where the celebration of art takes place.
Have a great week!
