In American culture, mothers were traditionally seen as the nurturers in the family, while fathers were considered the breadwinners. But for many 21st century families, these roles are changing. Today, it’s common for fathers to be active and involved in their children’s lives. In some families, it’s even the dad who stays at home with the kids while the mom goes to work and brings home the bacon.

Since 1908 people in the US have been honoring their fathers by celebrating Father’s Day. The exact date of Father’s Day changes each year. This year, it will be held on June 21st.

Dale is the proud papa of a 2-year-old boy. Listen to him and Devan talk about Father’s Day.

Devan:  So Father’s Day is coming up, and I know you’re a father, are you excited?

Dale:  I am extremely excited. I think…This would be technically the third year. ‘Cause the first time I celebrated Father’s Day my wife had my son in her tummy. So this is the third time. But he’s getting older, so it feels a lot more exciting that he can understand it, I think.

Devan:  So he understands what Father’s Day is?

Dale:  I don’t think he’ll understand what Father’s Day is, but it makes me feel good that there’s a day for us fathers to be at least recognized. But nowadays the culture of the United States is a little bit different. More fathers are getting involved with their kids so it’s kind of nice to have a little bit more recognition.

Devan:  I think that it’s definitely good to honor fathers. Did you…Barack Obama made a speech on Father’s Day last year just talking about male role models and how they’re very important and how we need more fathers in the home. It was a very moving speech, so…you know, it’s nice to see people like you who are taking care of their children and stepping up to their responsibilities.

The first time Dale celebrated Father’s Day as a dad was when his wife was pregnant. Now his son is two years old and Dale can’t wait for Father’s Day to come around again.

Both Devan and Dale agree that it’s important to honor fathers. Devan mentions a speech that Barack Obama made on Father’s Day last year encouraging fathers to be involved in their kids’ lives. It’s important for children to have both male and female role models.

In your country, what is the father’s role in the family? Is there anything you’d like to say to your dad on Father’s Day?

Ceirtainly, nowadays the role of fathes have changed. I agree with Obama and I consider that they should be a good rolemodels for their kids.

It is nice to see how the mums are also assuming important roles outside the domestic are. In many cases, they are becoming the "breadwinners" persons.

In China, father also play a special role  in the  family activities.Just like in other countries, fathers are the ones who bring home the bacon, and to some extent, they are the 'pillars'of the families.Usually, well,in my eyes,we are not good at showing our love to family members, maybe because of our culture,we used to hide it deep inside, but you just can feel it in your heart…

My father doesnot talk much, and i thought he just didnot care about me until one day i heard he said through the phone that"life must be very diffcult  for you since you are all alone in beijing, but,my dear daughter, you are always the 'no1'in my eye,i am so sorry that i cannot help you find a good job just like other fathers do…..take care of yourself."

After hanging up the phone,i was bathed  in tears…

I love you,papa!

Colombia

Here in Colombia South America father's day is very popular, father's role is very important in our society, he has had the breadwinner of the family. Of course nowdays this role has changed, now both woman and man not only have to work but nurture the famile. There is another figure that appears in our society unmarried mother, and I think that the role of father has a seriously attack in our society.
