Hi Friends!
I hope that you are all enjoying a wonderful beginning of July. I am happy because it is sunny and warm this week, and I feel happy to be living in such a beautiful place!
This week’s lesson covers a typical way to ask a friend to go out. In the conversation below, Miguel calls his friend Stephanie, to ask her out to see a movie.
Keep in mind that Miguel and Stephanie are very good friends who have known each other for a long time. Their conversation doesn’t show you how to ask someone you don’t know very well on a date, but it is a great indication of how friends typically talk to each other when making plans.

Stephanie:  This is Stephanie.

Miguel:  Hey Steph, what’s up? This is Miguel.

Stephanie:  How are you?

Miguel:  Not too bad. How are you doing?

Stephanie:  Good.

Miguel:  So, I’m calling cuz, uh, I want to know what you are up to this weekend.

Stephanie:  I don’t think I have any major plans. What’s going on?

Miguel:  Um, well I don’t have big plans either but I, there’s a movie I really want to see.

Stephanie:  Which one?

Miguel:  It’s called “Shrek”. Have you heard of it?

Stephanie:  (Laughs) Yeah. I heard it’s really, really good.

Miguel:  You haven’t seen it though?

Stephanie:  No.

Miguel:  That’s perfect. So, when are you free? Like both Friday and Saturday?

Stephanie:  Yeah, actually, Saturday would probably be better though. Friday would probably be better.

Miguel:  (Laughs) Okay. Why is Friday better?

Stephanie:  (Laughs) Cuz just being tired after work and stuff, I don’t want to go out and do something rowdy. I’d rather do something kind of mellow. Saturday I’d rather go out and…

Miguel:  And party?

Stephanie:  Yeah!

Miguel:  Oh okay. I’m cool with that. So, um what time is good for you?

Stephanie:  Um, I get off work at like four, five somewhere in there.

Miguel:  We might be able to hit a, a matinee.

Stephanie:  Yeah! Good thinkin’!

Miguel:  We can save some dough.

Stephanie:  Yeah.

Miguel:  Alright. Well, why don’t I just give you a call. Or why don’t you give me a call when you get off work and then we can plan where to see it.

Stephanie:  Okay. That sounds good.

Miguel:  Okay, sounds perfect. I’ll talk to you then.

Stephanie:  Okay!

Miguel:  Okay.

Stephanie:  Bye!

Miguel:  Later.

Discussion

This is a fun conversation to listen to because Miguel and Stephanie know each other so well, and are comfortable enough when speaking to each other to feel completely at ease. When Miguel tells Stephanie that he wants to see “Shrek”, she laughs, and her laugh lets him know that she also wants to see the same movie. When Stephanie changes her mind about Friday or Saturday being the same, Miguel knows before she tells him that she would rather see a movie on Friday and do something a little bit more crazy on Saturday.
There are a few other important things to notice in this conversation. Listen carefully to Stephanie when she answers the phone. She speaks quickly, so it is hard to hear the words, “This is Stephanie.” Also, when Miguel asks Stephanie out, he asks her if she “wants to” see a movie, but it sounds like he is saying, “wanna,” which is a common occurence.
If you have questions don’t forget to post them on the message boards! I hope you all have a great week!
