Are you ever doing an activity or chore that was boring and wished that there was a way to make it more fun? You should listen to podcasts while you’re washing your dishes or going for a run. They’re like radio shows that can be easily downloaded to your laptop or phone so that you can carry them around and listen to them anywhere, anytime.

There’s something for everyone. There are podcasts of all genres, from shows that sound like you’re listening to two friends chatting to a professional show of actors performing. They also cover all types of subjects, too, like learning English.

Lily tells Brian why she enjoys listening to podcasts so much. Find out more in today’s English lesson about online radio shows.

Dialog

1. Listen and Read - Listen to the audio and read the dialog at the same time.

Lily:  Hey, Brian.

Brian:  Yeah.

Lily:  Did you know that there was a time when Dallas was trying to become a port city even though it was 300 miles away from an actual ocean?

Brian:  No. Really?

Lily:  Yeah, I learned it on a podcast this morning. I listen to a lot of them all the time.

Brian:  Oh, podcasts. Those are radio shows on your computer, right?

Lily:  Yeah, you can get them on iTunes. Lots of them have websites. They’re really awesome. It’s such an exciting medium because there’s so much cool stuff happening. There are all these different genres. There’s something for everyone, really.

Brian:  Is it pre-recorded, or do they do them live?

Lily:  It depends on the show. But most of them are pre-recorded. There’s this one that I listen to all the time that’s this horror, kind of crazy one, called “Welcome to Night Vale.” And they do live shows because they are all theater people. And then you can also download them and listen to them on your phone or MP3 player.

Brian:  That seems pretty convenient. I was always a little confused about how they worked.

Lily is a big fan of podcasts. One of her favorites is a live show, and she describes it as being scary. She listens to other podcasts, too, and learns different facts that she uses to impress Brian.

Brian has never listened to a podcast. But he’s interested now that he has learned more about them from Lily. The shows seem very easy to download and are convenient. He’s sure to find something that he’ll like since there are so many different genres.

Do you listen to podcasts? Do you have a favorite podcast? Why do you like it?

@Seiyf  ,   Ted.Com indeed it`s  a great tool . I agree with you that  written translations are  of great help  in the beginning , now i prefer  not to read subtitles,   and if it is necessary for clarification I replay the audio two or three times .It happens on doing so that  i catch up on words that i missed out the first time.

Dear Mahtab,  thanks for pointing out  .i can explain. In the past I was being contacted by some people that obviously were con artist . I don`t know why i did this ,but the fact is that I cancelled my account  to see if they stop bothering me. Just recently I asked management that i want to reset   my account , they replied that  it is not possible. They advice that i should open a new one. I have been trying to open it ,so far unsuccessfully, maybe  with the help of a savvy friend i will be able to do it. Anyway , i consider you and others  very good friends .

As  @Mahtab`s  I  like podcasts for learning english,  if you are interested  it is  ”English as a second language podcast”, give it a try .The podcasts are streamed in slow and fast speed. Also ,VOA  ,The Voice of America  ranks among the best educational  audio  programmes for non-native english students.

I am familiar with podcasts. My favourite one is British Council’s Elementary Podcast. It’s very fun and helpful for learning English. It’s elementary podcast but but every one from different levels (maybe even advenced) can enjoy and learn new things. Julie3, you should try. BBC radios have podcasts too.

I stopped listening podcasts though. This lesson reminded me to start again.

Few years ago, one of my friends advised me to use a website for learning english by its podcasts!

It was interesting!

I could download the pre-recorded audio files of lessons or listen them online and after listening the lesson you could answer the exercises!

Of course it is more convenient if you download a podcast and listen that everytime and everywhere you want!

Now I found this podcast website useful and I wanna share with you!

There’s something for everyone who wants to learn english! ;)
