Ben and Jerry are two hippies from Vermont. They started their company in 1978. They make regular ice cream and special ice cream with no cow milk. Also, they are active in many social causes because they want a happy, peaceful world. The next time you want ice cream, buy a pint of Ben and Jerry’s. The odds are, you’ll enjoy it!
Jordin and Marni are talking about Ben and Jerry’s new dairy-free ice cream. Listen to this English lesson to find out why they’re both fans of this ice cream company.

Jordin: Have you heard about the new Ben and Jerry’s ice cream?
Marni: Everything But The Cow, non-dairy?
Jordin: That is what I’m talking about! I’m super excited…
Marni: I can tell.
Jordin: ...because I’m lactose intolerant, and so I usually can’t eat ice cream, and it’s the worst. Most of the other kinds of ice cream that don’t have milk suck. I’m very excited about the new Ben and Jerry’s ice cream because back when I didn’t know I was lactose intolerant, I would eat Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. I love Cherry Garcia, and I am quite certain that the new dairy-free option is going to be rad.
Marni: I am pretty excited about it as well. I’ve been a huge fan of Ben and Jerry’s for a long time. I think they’re just awesome, politically-active hippies.
Jordin: What do they do?
Marni: They’re just really active in, you know, social causes. They’ve always been One Percent for Peace. No Nukes is their slogan.
Jordin: That is so cool.
Marni: They’re just good people that make amazing ice cream. Since they do make such amazing ice cream, the odds are that their non-dairy ice cream is going to be delicious and flavorful.
Jordin: Do you want to go split a pint with me?
Marni: You got it.
Jordin: Yeah!

Discussion
Jordin is lactose intolerant. She shouldn’t eat ice cream, cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products. She wants to find a dairy-free ice cream that doesn’t suck. When she didn’t know she was lactose intolerant, she used to eat Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. Her favorite flavor was Cherry Garcia. Now, life is better because Ben and Jerry’s makes dairy-free ice cream from almond milk that Jordin can enjoy.
Marni isn’t lactose interolant, but she is a fan of Ben and Jerry’s, too. Marni thinks it’s cool that Ben and Jerry are two old hippies. She likes the company’s slogan, and she likes how the company is active in social causes. For example, they give money to One Percent for Peace to help stop war. Marni loves Ben and Jerry’s, so she’s ready to split a pint of the new dairy-free ice cream with Jordin.
Do you know someone who is lactose intolerant? Do they eat ice cream?
