Knowing the New Kids

Intro

Migs asks Joe if he liks boy bands like the Backstreet Boys. Joe explains that he doesn’t normally listen to that kind of music. Then, as a joke, Joe says that he likes New Kids on the Block. It’s funny because almost nobody listens to New Kids on the Block anymore.
The New Kids were very popular in the 1980’s, but most young people don’t listen to their music these days. However, some of the New Kids have gone on to other things. One of them is an actor, and had a role in the movie The Sixth Sense.

Dialog

1. Listen and Read - Listen to the audio and read the dialog at the same time.

2. Study - Read the dialog again to see how the vocab words are used.

Joe

Migs

Joe: No, I have the record. I just, I usually don’t bring that kind of music with me.

Migs: That’s your home listening stuff, right? That’s what you play when you’re just at home on the couch with your girlfriend.

Joe: Yeah… (laughs) When I want to unwind I listen to old, um, New Kids on the Block.

Migs: Oh, yeah, New Kids.

Joe: Justin, Jordan, and um…

Migs: See, you even know their names.

Joe: Yeah, yeah, yeah…

Migs: Did you know, did, did you see, uh, Donnie Wahlberg, did you see the Sixth Sense?

Joe: Oh yeah, was he in that?

Migs: Yeah Donnie Wahlberg is that uh, he’s the, you know New Kids on the Block and he was that crazy dude who shoots Bruce Willis.

Joe: Oh, I never even knew that!

Migs: Yeah, he’s got a big acting career now.

Joe: Oh wow. I really liked that movie too. Now I kinda don’t like it.

Migs: (Laughs)

Joe: No, yeah yeah, no, I didn’t know that was him.

Migs: That’s cool though how they can go from being that boy band to being… Marky Mark went from Funky Bunch to, you know, Boogie Nights and stuff… big actor and The Perfect Storm and all that.

Joe: That’s right. Mm, hm.

Migs: It’s cool that at least they can move on, even if people disrespect ‘em.

Joe: Yup.

Migs: They can find a new job…

Both Joe and Migs are laughing a lot in this conversation. The New Kids are a funny subject, because most people are embarrassed to say that they like listening to the New Kids on the Block.
