“The fact is, you’re not guaranteed a spot. People are going to have to prove their worth if they want to stay. This is not just a free ride and it can be any one of them. Just like any other job, if you don’t work hard you’ll be fired.”
Jason Wiley, Road Manager for MTV series Making the Band 2 in an interview with PopMatters.com

Definition

1. Definition - Study the definition.

a free ride is when you get something and neither pay for it nor work for it

2. Use - Learn how the slang is used.

When you expect a free ride, it means that you want to get something without paying for it or working for it. Mr. Wiley is talking about how the people on the show have got to work in order to make it and be successful. Personally, I don’t like getting a free ride. I like to work for what I have because then I am more proud of myself.

Examples

1. Examples - Hear some example sentences.

””Many people say that unemployed people are just lazy and want to have a free ride from the government. I think that might be true about some people, but for others it doesn’t hold true.”“
