Plot: It’s been twenty years since Laurie Strode’s brother tried to kill her on Halloween. She changed her name. Her face. Her life. She is now living in the small town of Summer Glen, California, with the name Keri Tate (Jamie Lee Curtis). But she is hiding a secret. Having faked her death in a car crash, she went into hiding with her son John (Josh Hartnett). But it’s October 31st again. Keri isn’t dealing with the anniversary well. She’s an alcoholic and a drug addict, and is always scared that her brother will come back to kill her and her son.
Clip: In this scene, it’s Halloween morning and John is trying to convince his mother to let him go on a camping trip with his friends. She doesn’t want to let him go because she’s worried that something bad is going to happen to him.

John:  Make you toast?   (John is making coffee and toast.)

Keri:  No, none for me, thanks. Caffeine is not a food group.

John:  How ‘bout a Percodan?

Keri:  Got mail. It’s from your dad.

John:  Birthday card.

Keri:  Oh, just a month late. I’m impressed.

John:  Cash is good. I’m gonna need it when I go to Yosemite.

Keri:  You’re not going.

John:  Yes I am.

Keri:  No, you’re not.

John:  Yes I am and with your full blessing, you wanna know why?

Keri:  Why?

John:  Because today is the day. I can feel it. Today is the day that you’re going to realize that I’m seventeen years old and you’re over protection and paranoia is inhibiting my growing proess.

Keri:  You wanna go camping? I’ll take you camping.

John:  I don’t want to go with you.

Keri:  Sorry.

John:  Dad would let me go.

Keri:  Well dad is an abusive, chain-smoking, methadone addict.

John:  Who would attract someone like that?

Keri:  Ouch.

John:  Just think – he left you.

Keri:  Look John, I know you get your smart mouth from my side of the family so I’ll give you a break. But point check you’re going too far.

John:  No I’m going to Yosemite.

Keri:  No you’re not.

John:  Look mom help me out here. I need a little more open air. I’ve earned it. Look I know today is

the day but…

Keri:  Oh really what day is that John?

John:  Halloween.

Keri:  I hadn’t noticed.

John:  Mom we’re through with all that. We really are.

Discussion

This is a great conversation between a mother and son. Conversations like this happen all the time. You should pay especially close attention to this one, because the speech is very natural and the language is very common. Halloween: H20 is not a great movie. However, it is scary! If you’re in the mood to be scared this Halloween, I recommend it. I give it an 6 out of 10. Have you seen any of the Halloween movies? What did you think? Have seen another movie recently that you want to talk about? Well, come to the “Movie Madness” message board and tell us about it! From the front row, – Migs
